About Glenmere Timber

There can be few people who had been able to claim the length of experience in the hardwood industry – worldwide, than Ron Robinson, the late founder and former chairman of Glenmere Timber. Born in 1928 and apart from a short stint in the RAF completing his National Service, Ron spent his whole working life in the timber trade, clocking up over 65 years of service.

Starting at the Co-op in London, (they actually had a timber department in the 1940 – 1950’s). It was here that Ron developed his love for hardwoods. Then he moved briefly to Reif and Son Timber Importers, and then on to Phoenix Timber in Rainham, Essex. By the 1970’s, Ron had done his apprenticeship, (about 25 years in all), he decided it was time to go it alone – and he set up Glenmere. He was not quite alone though, as Ivy his wife joined him, whom he had met at Reif’s, (so he knew Ivy had already had a good grounding in the timber trade), along with their eldest son, Kevin.

Within a couple of years Keith, Lesley and Michael, their younger children, and son-in-law Phil and daughter-in-law Louise joined the business.

Throughout his career Ron travelled extensively throughout the world sourcing timber and further extending his knowledge of the trade, he would happily share his knowledge with anyone who would listen – such was his love for hardwoods and his lifelong career!
