Oak

Quercus petraea

The heartwood is yellowish-brown, the sapwood is a little lighter. Usually straight grained. When quarter sawn, it shows a silver grain figure. Depending on where in Europe the timber is grown variances occur with regard to mildness and uniformity.

Fraxinus excelsior

The colour is cream to pale brown. The wood is tough and usually straight grained. Some boards have a dark or black heartwood which is known as olive ash.
