White Oak

Quercus alba

Varying in colour from a pale, yellow/brown, sometimes with a pinkish tint, quite similar to European Oak. Tends to be fairly straight grain. Usually lighter in colour and milder from the appalchian regions. Medium to coarse texture.

Black Walnut

Juglans nigra

The heartwood varies in colour from a rich dark brown to a purplish-black. The sapwood is usually narrow and a pale brown. The timber is mostly straight grained, but often has a wavy grain.

Fraximus Americana

The colour varies from almost white in the sapwood to light brown and reddish brown in the heart. The timber is usually straight grained and even textured.

Tulipwood

Liriodendron tulipifera – yellow poplar

Generally light in colour, the sapwood whitish, usually wide, the heartwood varying from grey to white to light brown. Fine and even texture with straight grain.

Cabinet making interior joinery, light construction doors, often painted

Prunus serotina

The colour varying from a warm, reddish brown in the heartwood, to the sapwood which is pinkish. Usually a fine, straight grain

Acer Saccharum – hard or rock maple

The colour is creamy white, with the heartwood being pinkish with fine darker lines. The timber is straight grained and fine textured.
